FREELANCE GRAPHIC DESIGNER

WEB AND GRAPHIC DESIGN

2013 - Present ___ BROOKLYN, NY

My best work was free work, as intern, collaboration - exposure. Although you may think monetary gain is not important to me, it is. I’ve been on a freelance mini tour since 2016 from Panorama to Lima, Peru. An extended immigration stay in Sao Paulo and now indefinitely in Brooklyn developing and presenting proposals for design work to small businesses and artists where I find I could be most useful. My current projects have mostly served non profits in my local community who are collectively hyped on ecological progress and a contemporary focus on civic art ie: a product of our environment.

My work has evolved over the years to include footwear design, marketing collateral, print media, poster design, illustration for mens apparel and food truck design; this I only did once. In February 2024 my portfolio morphed into an agency and I created a stage name - John for emails and when requesting payment. My very very small agency is called www.eightymen.com The outcome has been a positive experience and everything I imagined the gender pay gap to be.

DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES

PUBLIC SECTOR INTERPRETER/TRANSLTOR

2022 - 2023 ___ BROOKLYN, NY

Super serious, every second matters and everything is crucial, job. As soon as I was certified for legal interpreting I applied to DHS; three public service related exams and 5 interviews with the administration to be hired within a year. I was relocated from interpreting to the eligibility department short after. More stress, more people to help. It was so exciting. I did nothing innovative, I simply translated a few notes into Portuguese and Spanish for clients to be better prepared for interviews and for all documents to be present - my department exclusively served the latino community. At the time we held the top position for most applications processed for the region which directly translated to hundreds of families having a steady supply of food and shelter. I was terminated from this position.

CSEA CENTER FOR SOUTHEAST ASIANS

INTERPRETER AND TRANSLATOR

2017 - 2021 ___ PROVIDENCE, RI

CSEA was originally created by dedicated women to serve the needs of Southeast Asian immigrants living in the East Coast. Yearly expanding, CSEA continues to fight for better and more resources for the community including essential services like language assistance, healthcare access, family support, literacy programs, and financial guidance—all aimed at empowering individuals and families. I was responsively part of the language department hired to interpret and translate languages; Spanish and Portuguese. My work day took place in different locations for those navigating the complexities of public services, schools, and medical facilities. A most humbling and challenging experience, I am eternally grateful to have occupied this position and especially thankful for their employee development programs that funded my studies and language certifications.

WEBSTER HALL

BARTENDER

2011 - 2015 ___ NEW YORK CITY, NY

Webster Hall - pre shut down - was the last undefeated nightclub to sustain sanctuary for subcultural music; it was a church like experience dedicated to showcase artists like Motörhead, Skepta, Bad Brains, Roberto Carlos and a million others. I bartended serving sometimes thousands of people while in full view of unforgettable shows. I was very lucky and also appreciative of a flexible schedule where I could work at night and focus on creative projects by day. At Webster Hall I encountered unbelievable talent that helped me exhibit my work as a graphic designer and as bartender I learned to work under pressure. That’s the most valuable skill I learned here; mastering stress. On August 2017 the nightclub was shut down and years later reopened under new ownership.

LOOK FROM LONDON

MARKETING DIRECTOR

2009 - 2011 ___ BROOKLYN, NY

Established in 1982, Look from London Inc. is a designer legwear house that specializes in high-end printed leggings. I was initially hired to supervise and re-invent the brand’s website. I worked closely with web designers and developers to enhance our online presence. Once our website was launched I continued to look over the brand’s identity and was given marketing director position in Spring 2010. It was a great experience and a job I really miss. Regardless of our efforts in 2011 the company was sold a few times and now focus mainly on wholesale distribution.

BUHO MAGAZINE

DIGITAL MEDIA SPECIALIST

2009 - 2010 ___ BROOKLYN, NY

I had a graveyard shift at BUHO where I mostly edited photos for print and occasionally generated ads. I failed to produce anything I am proud of and definitely should have put more effort in less exciting projects. This magazine closed its doors in 2010.

TRASH AND VAUDEVILLE

IN HOUSE RETAIL BUYER FOR FOOTWEAR

2008 - 2011 ___ NEW YORK CITY, NY

Trash and Vaudeville, a punk emporium dressing cult icons since the Nixon era. I was hired for a sales position; coincidentally the day I moved to New York. My first task was to organize the entire shoe inventory in the sub basement of the old St. Mark’s building. It was a 30 year mess of water leakage and rats! However I persevered. In a short time I was given more responsibilities; specifically became more involved with analyzing footwear sales and within a year I was given shoe buyer title. At the time I made what was considered wasteful selections in particular to carry women’s heels/platforms up to a size 18 for the boys and increased quantity of units for specific underground brands. I was fired a few times for some heartfelt decisions; thankfully all extreme ideas proved successful and I was re-hired twice during my career at Trash & Vaudeville. Along with some press, I was presented with surprising opportunities designing exclusive small collections for our shop and collaborating with shoe brands: Underground London, T.U.K., Pleaser, Dr Martens, and Jeffrey Campbell.
